Hiring an Affiliate OPM: Build a Handoff That Gets Work Moving | Agencies | CostPerNews

Hiring an outsourced program manager, often called an OPM, does not make unclear ownership disappear. It gives you another team that needs a usable brief, named decision makers and access appropriate to its job.

The first question is not which firm calls itself the best. It is what work needs an owner. This guide focuses on the handoff. It does not rank providers or verify claims about how many programs any agency has managed.

Start with the decisions that are stuck

List unresolved partner applications, offer errors, reporting questions and recruiting gaps. For each, name the person who can approve a change. Separate routine work the OPM can perform from decisions that need merchant approval, such as commission changes, incentive spending or contract amendments.

Document the platform accounts and materials the team needs. Grant access through the normal authorized process, with appropriate roles. Do not share passwords as a substitute for proper account access.

A fictional first-month handoff

Imagine a fictional apparel merchant with 40 pending applications, three outdated creative sets and no agreed definition of an active partner. Its first deliverables could be a recommendation on the application backlog, a corrected creative inventory and a proposed reporting definition for approval.

Assign dates based on the actual workload. Do not promise that resolving 40 applications means recruiting 40 valuable partners. Some may be unsuitable, duplicates or missing information. A useful handoff makes those distinctions visible.

Build a working plan, then review it

The next phase might prioritize one audience gap and a small, researched prospect list. Ask the OPM to explain why each partner fits, what a useful placement could look like and what the merchant must supply. A count of emails sent is insufficient evidence that the program is building useful relationships.

Review completed work, unresolved dependencies and the next commercial decision together. Before the relationship starts, agree where records live and what the merchant receives at exit.
